Working Equitation first started as a competitive sport in The first European Championships took place the same year, in Italy. WE is now a recognized sport in two continents, Europe and South America, in the following countries – France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Brazil, with a considerable amount of competitors and spectators in each country. The theme of the care and breeding of the horse is often discussed in encyclopedic works, such as Geopónica (overall work about agronomy, compiled in Constantinople under the Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus, in the tenth century), or in the Liber de animalibus by Albert the Great (), De rerum proprietatibus by Bartholomew de.

At Equitation Science International, our mission is to educate horse riders and handlers in equitation science to enable efficiency and safety in all horse/interactions. Equitation Science is an emerging field that explains why horses behave as they do, their biomechanical patterns and limitations and on this template, how we can modify horse behaviour. That would be working equitation (WE), a discipline popular in Europe and rapidly gaining adherents in the U.S.

Founded in the mids in Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy, this international sport showcases the equitation Author: Jennifer Forsberg Meyer. Working Equitation (WE) was developed in Europe in the ’s as a means to develop and test the skills of horses and riders who do fieldwork.

Fieldwork refers to those who work cattle in the fields/pastures in Southern Europe. The term equitation often conjures up images of people in fancy dress following some ridged and arcane rules of horsemanship, sitting on their horses like mannequins, teeth gleaming in fixed smiles.

We see saddles marketed as "equitation models" and videos sold on "how to win in equitation classes" without much thought for the reasons behind.
